- Joan Williams 1928-2004; Williams was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1928. She graduated from Bard college in New York, where she earned her first award for writing a short fiction piece called Rain Later. She became a great friend of William Faulkner and had a romantic relationship with him from 1949 to 1953. She wrote her first novel in 1961, and The Morning and the Evening was given the John P.
