In 1791, this island was included with Waldron and several others in the area as Islas de Moraleja when named by Lieut. Juan Francisco de Eliza. In 1841, it was named Stuart's Island by Cmdr. Wilkes for Frederick D. Stuart, captain's clerk on the Peacock. An alternate version of the naming is that Capt. Richards, RN, placed it on British admiralty charts in 1858 to honor Capt. Charles Edward Stuart of Hudson's Bay Company, who traded in the area between 1853 and 1863. The Lummi Indian name was Qunnis, meaning whale.)
