A collection of essays and lectures, many of them published previously, dealing with Jews in the intellectual life of 20th-century Germany and Austria. Mentions antisemitism experienced by some of these Jews or their fate during the Nazi period. Describes the Jewish self-hatred of Weininger (pp. 104-132), as well as debates between Rathenau and Einstein and between Benjamin and Scholem on the Jews' desire to be full-fledged Germans vs. the Germans' rejection of Jews. A preliminary chapter on Felix Mendelssohn places him in the context of Jewish emancipation, and a closing chapter, "Deutsche und Juden nach dem Widerruf" (pp. 429-446), traces German antisemitism from emancipation to the present.
