בספר הזה מכונסים שלושה-עשר פרקי מחקר ועיונים אחרים בעברית החדשה. שבעת הפרקים הראשונים מציעים עיונים העוסקים בעברית המתחיה והחיה, הכתובה והמדוברת, ובעשייה בה. מקום חשוב בעיונים האלה תופסות פעולותיהם של שני המוסדות שנטלו על עצמם את מלאכת העשייה בלשון ובהכוונתה: ועד הלשון העברית והאקדמיה ללשון העברית, ולא פחות מזה נידונו פעולותיהם של סופרים ושל עושים אחרים בלשון החיה - הכתובה והמדוברת. ; שלושת הפרקים הקצרים ח-י מוקדשים לשני ספרים של שני סופרים ולמקצת ממפעלותיו של חוקר שעשה למען העברית; שלושת הפרקים יא-יג עוסקים בהיבטים שונים של הוראת העברית כיום ובמקצת מתוצאות מעשי ההוראה ומחדליה בדורנו. בכל העיונים האלה באה לידי ביטוי השקפתו של המחבר שבחקירת העברית החדשה יש לשלב את העיסוק בדרך התיאורית עם התבוננות בזיקתה למורשת הדורות, שהיא קו ברור ומרכזי בהתגבשות כל סוגותיה.
