1,500 Soviet immigrants arrived in Israel over Rosh Hashana. Because of the holiday the Absorption Ministry was not able to process the newcomers. About 1,000 of the immigrants were sent to an army base until after the holiday not looked after by the army. The immigrants praised the female soldiers who looked after them and commented that the food they received on the army base was better that they were able to get in Russia. The temporary space in the camp was because many soldiers had been given holiday leave. Russian speaking soldiers were on hand to help the new comers.
