Photograph is printed in a book with a description beneath printed description: "(Numbers, i.)--We continue through this book of Numbers to illustrate the life of Moses by pictures taken from the land in which he grew up. The Tomb of Suktan Barkuk is really a mosque or place of Mohammedan worship. There stands above it two superb domes and two minarets. Under the dome at the north are the tombs of the male, and under the dome at the south are the tombs of the female, members of the family. Barkuk belonged to the family of the Circassian Mameluke Sultans who reigned in Egypt from A.D. 1382 to 1517. The limestone pulpit in this mosque and the two minarets are beautiful specimens of stone work. Barkuk was a Circassian slave who raised himself to the throne by setting aside Haggi, a boy of six years and great grandson of Mohammed-en-Nasir. The reign of Barkuk was not peaceful. His intrigues and treachery so exasperated the Emirs that they conspired against him and finally dethroned him in 1389, but he was soon restored and reigned until 1399."
