Biographical summary
Stefan Zweig (Vienna 1881-Petropolis 1942), Austrian essayist, biographer, dramatist, & translator (from French). From 1919 resident in Salzburg, from 1935 in England, and eventually from 1940 in Brazil. The Library's portion of his estate was a gift from Zweig before he left Austria.
Ownership history
In 1933, Stefan Zweig established contact with the National Library concerning the transfer of parts of his correspondence to Jerusalem. During the 1930s the material was shipped in several installments to the National Library. Zweig's condition was a restriction on use of the material for ten years after his death. Later on, Lavinia Mazzuchetti, Zweig's translator into Italian, donated the material related to Zweig that she had collected. This material was added to the collection already in the National Library.
Language Note
The material is mostly in German, with several items in French and a few items in other languages.
