Description

The collection consists of manuscripts by the Jewish-Hungarian orientalist Eduard Neumann. Two of the manuscripts are copies, in Arabic, made by Neumann himself, of medieval traditional Islamic texts. One of them is a copy of a manuscript kept at the Munich State Library (Aumer Katalog 444,5 - Prophetengeschichten von Muhammed…). The collection also includes a manuscript of a German book by Neumann about the Hebrew ancient literature (Geschichte der hebräischen Literatur).

Biographical summary
Rabbi Dr. Ede Neumann was born in Óbuda (Budapest) on October 26, 1859. Studied at the Budapest Rabbinical Seminary between the years 1877-1882. In 1882 received his doctoral degree in Islamic studies from the University of Budapest. A year later he became the chief rabbi of Nagykanizsán, Hungary, and served in this post until his death. Neumann was very active in the Jewish public life of Hungary, and was one of the leaders of the Rabbinical Association there. Neumann Ede died on December 12, 1919. His only son was the famous Hungarian art critic Naményi Ernő (1888-1957).
Ownership history
This collection was permanently deposited at the Jewish National and University Library in May 1940 by Ede Neumann's son, Dr. Ernő Naményi, shortly before he left Budapest. Originally, the collection included remains of the Ludwig Philipson and Meyer Kayserling archives as well.
