TENSE RELATIONS IN SILWAN. |
---|---|
Scope and content |
Jewish settlers, who are waiting to move into the predominantly East Jerusalem section of Silwan, have sent a letter to Prime Minister Shamir complaining that the police were not complying with the government directive allowing them to move into the houses they have purchased. The Arab residents of Silwan have asked a Jerusalem magistrates court to stop the settlers moving in to Silwan. On the other hand the housing association Elad were demanding compensation from the police for financial losses occurring during the two months they were unable to use the homes they had purchased or leased in Silwan. The move by the Jewish settlers is seen by many, including several extreme left wing political parties, as being very provocative. Right wing supporters of the settlers see the buying or renting of property in any part of Jerusalem as a right, providing it is done with the law. Photo shows police force guarding to prevent violence at Silwan. |
