Yad Yaari is a research and documentation center established to preserve and promote the heritage of HaShomer HaTzair - the first Zionist youth movement, founded in 1911 - and the Kibbutz Artzi, the federation of HaShomer kibbutzim founded in 1927, which in 1999 merged with the United Kibbutz Movement to form the Kibbutz Movement. The Yad Yaari archive has collected diverse archival materials about dance, in particular dances created at the kibbutzim. Archival materials include: many photographs, a large collection of posters, many folders containing a variety of documents documenting dance activity at the HaShomer HaTzair kibbutzim, and Kibbutz Artzi institutions, including the dance division, and the culture and outreach division. Additional materials about dance are found in the many private collections deposited with Yad Ya'ari, including documentation of folk dances, conferences, and seminars, courses for folk dance instructors, and kibbutz dance events. The archives also keep personal files of dance creators, such as Ze'ev Chavatzelet, and Mattityahu Shelem. In 2019, a representative sample of the archival materials was sorted, cataloged, and converted to digital media as part of the project "The National Digital Collection of Dance Archives" managed by the National Library of Israel. The items were selected by the National Library project team in collaboration with the Yad Yaari archive team, and focus on activity covering the 1930s to the 1960s. The selected archival materials include: administrative and personal correspondence concerning the organization of dance seminars, such as a personal handwritten letter from Rivka Sturman to Ze'ev Bezer relating to a booklet in memory of Ze'ev Chavatzelet after his death; a personal handwritten letter from Gabriella Oren to Rachel Emanuel about teaching dance; a letter from Shlomit Ratz to Tirza Hodes; photographs of folk dances at kibbutzim and abroad; posters for HaShomer HaTzair conferences and performances that represent the folk and artistic dance of the period. Following processing by the National Library, all items in the representative selection were returned to the Yad Yaari archive, where they are deposited and preserved.
