Description

The collection includes material relating to the creation of an original illuminated work by Ellen Eve Frank that tells the story of Hanukkah in English. Incorporating state of the art materials and ancient techniques and materials, such as vellum and gold and silver leaf, the collection includes original drafts, sketches, studies and finished pages that form part of a project that culminated in "Hanukkah Illuminated: A Book of Days". The collection also includes correspondence, especially with the author of the written text, Everett Fox, about the manuscript at its different stages of creation, research notes about Hanukkah, Jewish history of Second Temple Period, the Book of Maccabees I and II, newspaper articles about the work, folders containing material for each day that appears in the text and a printed copy of the complete text. Ellen Frank's partner, Stephen Dickman, donated the collection to the National Library of Israel in March 2023.

Biographical summary
Ellen Eve Frank (1946-2021) was an American artist, writer, and educator, based in New York, known for her illuminated manuscripts, which often incorporate precious metals, such as gold leaf, on murals and scrolls, linens and panels. In 2004, she founded the Ellen Frank Illumination Arts Foundation, which promotes the art of illumination and the creation of new works of art in the genre, and advocates peace education and bridging religious gaps. Frank had a Ph.D in English literature and the visual arts from Yale University, and was Assistant Professor of English at University of California, Berkeley. She published several written works on the topics of painting, architecture, and literature and won several awards including a Fulbright scholarship and a Ford Foundation grant.
