Presents a socio-demographic profile of Hungarian Jewry in April 1944, according to three basic religious groups, based on responses to a questionnaire sent to religious communities by the Jewish Council in Budapest at the request of the Nazis. Notes socio-economic differences between Trianon Hungary (1919-1939) and the annexed territories stemming from the policies of Hungarian authorities toward Jews. Restrictions on the entire Jewish population in the annexed territories led to a relative economic balance between the different religious streams. In Trianon Hungary the Jews had more possibilities to maneuver to cope with the anti-Jewish laws, and the differences between the religious streams that had existed from the beginning of the century remained. Concludes that although the anti-Jewish decrees reduced the economic differences, the religious, cultural, and social polarization of Hungarian Jewry continued during the process of its extermination.
