Title The German Gold Discount Bank (Dego) and the persecution of the Jews 1933-1945.
Host Item Yad Vashem Studies 40,2 (2012) 35-61
Description There is a view that during the Nazi era the Deutsche Goldkreditbank (Dego) was nothing but a subsidiary of the Reichsbank and a mere tool in the latter's operations intended to divest Jews of their capital. After the war, Dego's managers made the same claims. However, the examination of Dego's records of 1933-42 shows that this bank was a key institution in carrying out the expropriation and exploitation of Jewish assets and securities. It acted autonomously, profited greatly from these transactions, and also helped the institutions with which it maintained a relationship (e.g. chambers of trade and commerce, the Foreign Exchange Bureau, etc.). It was Dego which secured the smooth operation of the Aryanization process and channeled the profits into funding the Nazi regime. Dwells, also, on the excessive state-levied taxes and financial regulations specifically targeting Jews, both those intending to emigrate and those who remained in Germany.
