Description The inter-group contact hypothesis assumes that protracted, close, cooperative, supportive, and equal inter-group contact can decrease negative perceptions one group may have towards the other (Allport, 1954). The present research is one of the first of the few studies that have examined changes in social relations within binational sport teams throughout a defined period. Research examining the influence of participation in Jewish and Arab binational encounters indicated temporary positive effects, however after a short period of time these effects disappeared (Bar-Natan, 2004
Biton, 2002
Maslov, 2003
Losteg, 2003
Rosen, 2006). Furthermore, it examined the influence of participation in binational and uninational soccer clubs on perceptions of "the other side" among Jewish and Arab children as a function of participation duration. The findings indicated positive changes in the main measures of the research: (a) negative emotions toward the other side, (b) social proximity and friendship with the other side, and (c) negative stereotypes toward the other side, among Jewish and Arab participants in binational soccer clubs, as a function of participation duration. In contrast, the findings indicated that there were no changes in perception among Jewish and Arab participants in uninational soccer clubs as a function of participation duration. Furthermore, the main positive perceptions among participants in binational soccer clubs occurred in the first year of the cooperative participation.
