Born in Samarkand in 1905. Studied in Russian-Hebrew school with teachers from Jerusalem. At first, Soviets tried to win over minorities by allowing preservation of their ethnic character, Jews and Muslims enjoying some freedom. Afterwards pressure for russification. As son of bourgeois merchant, not accepted to university, so attended yeshiva and then pedagogical institute to become a teacher and curriculum developer. Young Jews allowed into university, which encouraged more assimilation, but no intermarriage occurred. Aliya in 1973.
