- African American National Biography, accessed February 19, 2015, via Oxford African American Studies Center database:(Loguen, Jermain Wesley; Jarm Logue; abolitionist, African Methodist Episcopal Zion Bishop; born c. 1813 in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States; escaped slavery and reached Hamilton, Upper Canada (1835); creditors seized his farm (1837) and he moved to Rochester, New York; worked as a hotel porter; enrolled at Beriah Green's abolitionist school, Oneida Institute (1839); started a school in nearby Utica for African American children and made a public profession of faith; settled and opened another school in Syracuse (1841); was ordained by the AMEZ Church (1842); gave his first speech against slavery in Plattsburgh, New York (1844); participated in the famous rescue of William “Jerry” McHenry in Syracuse (October 1851); joined the Radical Abolition Society (1854); devoted all of his time to the Fugitive Aid Society (1857); claimed to have assisted more than 1,500 runaway slaves in his autobiography, A Stop on the Underground Railroad (1859); served as pastor of Zion Church in Binghamton, New York (1860s); became bishop of the Fifth District of the AMEZ Church (1868); died 30 September 1872 in Saratoga Springs, New York, United States)
