"לפני שישה ימים הפך האסטרונאוט מארק וואטני לאחד האנשים הראשונים לצעוד על מאדים. כעת הוא בטוח שיהיה האדם הראשון למות שם. לאחר שסופת אבק חמורה מאלצת את חבריו לצוות להתפנות מהמקום כשהם בטוחים כי הוא מת, מארק מוצא את עצמו נטוש ובודד להפליא ללא כל דרך אפילו לאותת לכדור הארץ שהוא בחיים. אבל גם לו היה יכול לאותת, רוב הסיכויים שהמזון שברשותו יאזל הרבה לפני שמשלחת ההצלה תגיע. בכלל, רוב הסיכויים שלא יספיק אפילו לגווע ברעב – סביר יותר להניח שתקלות במכשור, הסביבה העוינת או טעות אנוש קטנה יחסלו אותו הרבה קודם. אבל מארק לא מוכן עדיין להרים ידיים. בעקשנות בלתי-נלאית, תוך שימוש יצירתי בכישוריו הרבים, הוא מתמודד עם אתגרים בלתי-אפשריים בזה אחר זה, ויכול להם ..." -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
