יושב חנווני מהבוקר,
והוא המאה ברחוב,
יושב וחושב על לקוח,
וחושך בחוץ, ורטוב.

מלאכה יהודית הוא מקדם,
ולא לכל סתם בן אדם,
מלאכה לגדולים כמו קהלת
מלאכה למלכים לבדם.

לפתע מופיע לקוח,
גדול כגרגר אפונה,
קונה בפרוטה דג מלוח,
וסוף, ושלום ותודה.

רואים זאת שכניו, מקנאים בו,
מאה חנווני הרחוב,
מבט של קנאה נועצים בו,
אותו מבקשים הם לטרוף.

יושב חנווני מהבוקר,
והוא המאה ברחוב,
יושב וחושב על לקוח,
ולילה בחוץ ורטוב.
השיר היידי הוא חלק מפואמה ארוכה בת 25 בתים מאת אברהם ליסין, שנכתבה במינסק ב-1896--מקור המידע: חנה ויוסף מלוטק, לידער פון דור צו דור, עמ' 74. השיר תורגם בשנות ה70 על ידי יעקב שבתאי וזכה לתרגום נוסף מאת דן אלמגור.
