הלחן נחשב לעתים כרוסי, אך אין לכך אסמכתה.
לפי ספר שיריו של ישעיהו בן-חיים "לי ארץ זית", השיר נכתב בדמשק בשנת תרע"ז (1917). לא ברור אם בן-חיים הכיר את הלחן והתאים את מילותיו אליו, או שמא ההתאמה נעשתה מאוחר יותר. לפי יודקה בן-דוד, השיר הושר על ידי הגדודים העבריים במלחמת העולם הראשונה.
אתר זמרשת כותב שבשיחה עם אורי יעקובוביץ' הוא סיפר כי למד את השיר ב- 1942-3, בסניף הנוער-העובד "דב הוז" ליד גן מאיר בתל-אביב. הבנים שרו: "שכחתיה" והבנות: "שכחתיהו".
