The relocation of the nucleus of the Betar movement from the Warsaw ghetto to the Hrubieszów area in the summer of 1941 is a prominent theme in the historiography of the Betar underground during World War II. Chaim Lazar-Litai portrayed it as a major milestone - a period of preparation and training that preceded the mobilization of the Betar cadres in Żydowski Związek Wojskowy (ŻZW) prior to the uprising in the Warsaw ghetto. Some other authors have also followed this view. Examining the Hrubieszów episode with extant witness accounts, Libionka concludes that the relocation played either a negative role in Betar's preparations for fighting, or no role at all. The Zionist Revisionist movement relocated its active members (with full authorization of the Germans) to Hrubieszów in an attempt to preserve its manpower for the future in the more favorable conditions of an agricultural farm. It is unclear how many people were relocated to Hrubieszów and whether all of them belonged to Betar. In any case, in summer 1942 most of them were deported to Sobibor and killed there, and only a handful of these Betar members returned to Warsaw. There is no reason to believe that the birth of the ŻZW was a direct consequence of their return.
