Yaakov Matrikin was born in 1902 inMarienhausen (Russia) to Mendel Matrikin and Rachel nee Orlov. He had two sisters; Riva (Epstein) and Raya (Yardeni). His family moved to Tartu and then to Riga (Latvia).He was refused admittance to the University to study architecture in his country and he therefore went to study at the University of Oldenberg in Germany. After completing his studies he worked for a carpenter for one year to learn the trade. He moved to Israel in 1924 and settled in Jerusalem. Between the years 1928-1951 he was the Head of the Technical Department in the Settlement Division of the Jewish Agency. His work dealt with the development, training and supervision of the rural settlements. Some of his major achievements include: 3 new settlements in the Negev- Beit Eshel, Gevulot and Revivim; New settlements in the Galili – Hakok, Metzudat Birya and Metzudat Ramat Naftali. He designed the dining rooms in the kibbutzim: Mizra, Tel Katzir, Afikim, Nirim, Ein Gedi and Mishmarot (1939). He planned the Youth Hostel in Kibbutz Kiryat Anavim, the Guest House in Kibbutz Ayelet Hashahar and others. Yaakov designed the Tnuva dairies in Haifa, Tel-Aviv, Rehovot and Jerusalem. He also designed Beit Ha'Olim in Northern Tel-Aviv, the Agricultural School in Ein Kerem in Jerusalem, the Amal School in Ramle, Kiryat Moriah in Jerusalem, the Commercial Center in Kiryat Hayovel in Jerusalem, The Swedish Village for Disabled Youth and was one of the planners of the Adulam Reserve. When he completed his work in the Jewish Agency, he opened a private architects firm in Jerusalem: "City Planning Architects and Engineers". In Israel he met Ziona Felbrit, born in Makmenich in the Podolski region of Ukraine and one of the founders of Kibbutz Kiryat Anavim. They married in1932. Ziona was a nurse in the Hadassah Hospital and in the Leyada: The Hebrew University Secondary School. The couple had two daughters: Nahva (Ben David) and Rachel (Beiron-Gold). Yaakov passed away in 1981. He is buried in the cemetery of the Kibbutz. This photo collection was brought to the Yad Ben-Zvi Archives by Nahva and Rachel, the daughters of Yaakov and Ziona. The collection includes photographs of the projects he planned during the years, sites in Israel and pictures of the Tnuva Dairies in Haifa, Jerusalem and Rehovot.
