Many Jews in Yugoslavia felt that the best way to survive was to flee into the Italian zone of occupation. Mussolini's policy toward the Jews might have been inconsistent, but he was not a racist, and the Italian authorities did save Jews. In November 1941, Italian authorities in Dalmatia sent ca. 1,000 Jewish refugees from Split to Italy, where they were dispersed in small groups in villages in the Alps as "civilian prisoners." Documents found in one of these villages, Possagno (near Treviso), show how humanistic was the attitude of the local authorities toward the Jews who were interned there. All of the Jewish refugees in Possagno survived the German occupation of Italy they were hidden by the local residents for almost two years. Pp. 356-360 contain the texts of eight documents.
