Focuses on the 1965 debates in the West German parliament regarding the statute of limitations covering all murders committed during the Third Reich. There was a great reluctance to extend the period that Nazi murderers could be investigated and put on trial. The outcome was a compromise, whereby the statute remained set at 20 years but the date the clock started ticking was moved from 8 May 1945 to 1 January 1950. The outcome pointed to the reluctance of the politicans, reflecting the attitude of the public, to prosecute former Nazis. Nevertheless, the debate suggested a weakening in the policy of integrating former Nazis into society. In 1969 the statute of limitations was extended to 30 years and, a decade later, abolished completely.
