היסטוריה ארכיונית: יחיאל אורגל אסף את חומרי הארכיון שלו בין השנים 1950–2019 ושמר אותם בביתו. במהלך הצטברות הארכיון סודרו החומרים באוגדנים לפי שיוכם למוסדות תרבות ומופעים או לפי סדר א"ב של שם ההצגה או המופע. בתקופה זו לא הופקו לארכיון עזרי איתור או קטלוג. בשנת 2020 הארכיון סודר, נרשם והומר למדיה דיגיטלית במסגרת מיזם "האוסף הלאומי הדיגיטלי בתחום התיאטרון" בניהול הספרייה הלאומית. במסגרת הטיפול בארכיון חולקו החומרים לשש חטיבות לפי סוגי החומרים: (1) חטיבת תוכניות שאסף אורגל מהצגות שעיצב עבורן תאורה. התוכניות חולקו לסדרות לפי שם המוסד ושנות הפעילות של אורגל במוסד. (2) חטיבת תיקי הצגות, שבה עיקר חומרי הארכיון המתעדים את פעילותו המקצועית של אורגל. החומרים בחטיבה חולקו לסדרות לפי שמות המופעים שבהפקתם השתתף, והיא מכילה מפות תאורה, תוכניות, רשימות קיו (הוראות תפעול לבמה), מסמכים, מכתבים, מחזות, סקיצות וחומרים נוספים הקשורים לכל הפקה והצגה. (3) חטיבת מסמכים, שבה סודרו המסמכים לפי הקשר נושאי כגון סדרה של מסמכים אישיים, או לפי סוג החומר כגון סדרה של מכתבים. (4) חטיבת תצלומים מכלל פעילותו המקצועית של אורגל וכן תצלומים אישיים. (5) חטיבת קטעי עיתונות ופרסומים על אודות אורגל. (6) חטיבת קטעי אודיו ווידיאו, המורכבת מחומרים שהתקבלו על גבי תקליטורי DVD וקלטות וידיאו. מרבית החומרים בחטיבה זאת הם תיעוד של מופעים, הצגות והפקות שאורגל עיצב עבורן תאורה. הארכיון נרשם ונסרק באופן מקיף, למעט פריטים כפולים, פרסומים וגזרי עיתונות שנרשמו באופן בסיסי ולא נשלחו לסריקה. עבודת הרישום הניבה רשימת מיזמים מפורטת ורשימת מוסדות ואישים שעבדו עם יחיאל אורגל, ובהם התיאטרון העירוני חיפה, תיאטרון בית ליסין, התיאטרון העירוני באר שבע, האופרה הישראלית תל אביב־יפו, תיאטרון גיורא גודיק, רות אשל, עודד קוטלר, נעם סמל, יוסף מילוא וציפי פינס. בשנת 2023 ארכיון יחיאל אורגל הופקד בארכיון והמוזיאון לתיאטרון ע״ש ישראל גור באוניברסיטה העברית, הר הצופים.

Archive history: Yehiel Orgel collected his archival materials between 1950-2019 and kept them in his home. While accumulating the archive, materials were arranged in folders, according to cultural institution and show, or in alphabetical order by name of play or show. During this period, no finding aids or catalogs were produced for the archive. In 2020, the archive was sorted, cataloged, and converted to digital media as part of the project "The National Digital Collection of Theater Archives" managed by the National Library of Israel. Archival processing divided the materials into six fonds by type: (1) Show programs collected by Orgel from performances for which he designed lighting. The show programs are divided into series by name of institution, and years of Orgel's activity at that institution. (2) Production folders containing most of the archival materials documenting Orgel's career. Materials are divided into series according to names of shows in which he participated, and contain lighting plots, plans, cue sheets (lists of operating instructions), documents, letters, plays, sketches, and other materials related to each production and show. (3) Documents organized by thematic context such as a personal documents series, or type of material, such as a correspondence series. (4) Photographs from all Orgel's professional activities, as well as personal photographs. (5) Press clippings and publicity about Orgel. (6) Audio clips, and video clips consisting of materials received on DVD and videotape. Most materials in this fond are documentation of shows, plays, and shows for which Orgel designed the lighting.The archive was cataloged and scanned comprehensively, excluding duplicate items, publicity, and press clippings that were cataloged at core-level, and were not scanned. Cataloging produced a detailed list of projects and a list of institutions and individuals who worked with Yechiel Orgel, including the Haifa Municipal Theater, the Beit Lessin Theater, the Beer Sheva Municipal Theater, the Israeli Opera Tel Aviv-Yafo, the Giora Godik Theater, choreographer Ruth Eshel, actor-director Oded Kotler, theater manager Noam Semel, actor-director Yosef Millo, and director-theater manager Tzipi Pines. In 2023, the Yechiel Orgel Archive was deposited with the Israel Goor Theater Archives and Museum at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
